The Story Behind the Mark
Carl Bertram, a poultry business owner in Solingen, Germany, began crafting cutlery around 1845 with a modest facility and an outsized ambition for quality. By 1865, the now-famous Hen & Rooster logo was adopted, marking every blade as a product of genuine Solingen craftsmanship.
For generations, the Bertram family steered the firm through an era when Solingen knives set the global standard. The factory produced contract blades for dozens of respected American cutlery firms in the 1960s and 1970s, cementing Hen & Rooster’s reputation across two continents among traders and collectors alike.
In 1983, James Frost of Frost Cutlery acquired the trademark and Bertram name, pledging to honor the same standards that made the brand legendary. Production of select pocket knife lines continues in Solingen to this day, carrying the title “World’s Finest Since 1845” into the twenty-first century.

Look for “Solingen Germany” stamped on the blade tang. Models marked only “Solingen Steel” without “Germany” were manufactured elsewhere and are a different production tier.
